What Is a Mastectomy Bra? A Complete Guide to Features, Styles & Fit

The short answer

A mastectomy bra is a bra designed for wear after a single or double mastectomy — with hidden pockets for breast forms, soft fabrics that won't irritate healing skin, wide bands and straps for support, and (in most styles) a front closure so you don't have to reach behind your back.

Undergoing a mastectomy means seeing your body change in ways you hadn't imagined. We're so used to associating femininity with breasts that no longer having them — or having a very different version of them — can be emotional, physical, and sometimes genuinely traumatic. The right post-surgery bra won't erase any of that. But it can make the day-to-day feel gentler: supported where you need it, soft where you're tender, and shaped in a way that feels like you again.

What is a mastectomy bra?

A mastectomy bra is a bra worn after a single or double mastectomy. From the outside, it can look like any other bra — lace, lounge, sport, or everyday T-shirt — but the inside is built differently. Hidden pockets hold breast forms or prostheses in place. Seams are placed where they won't press into scar tissue. Bands sit wider for support without digging. Straps are broader so the weight of a form is carried gently across your shoulder rather than pinching.

The goal isn't just function. A well-fit mastectomy bra should give you something most women don't expect to feel again after surgery: peace of mind. That you look even under your clothes. That nothing will shift. That you can move through your day without thinking about your chest every five minutes.

Features to look for in a mastectomy bra

Pockets on both sides

Every Myya bra is pocketed on both cups, so the same bra works whether you've had a single or double mastectomy, a lumpectomy, or reconstruction with asymmetry. Our pocket linings are made of soft cotton — not nylon or mesh — so the inside of the bra feels calm against skin that is still healing or newly sensitive.

Soft, skin-kind fabric

Post-surgical skin doesn't want to be scratched. Myya bras are cut from supersoft knits and brushed microfibers that glide over scars rather than catching on them. If you've had radiation, this matters even more — radiated skin is thinner and more reactive, and the wrong fabric can feel like sandpaper.

Wireless construction & wide underbands

After surgery, the last thing most women want is an underwire poking into a fresh incision. Every Myya bra is wire-free. We use wide, reinforced underbands to create the shaping that a wire would normally provide — same support, none of the pressure on sensitive tissue.

Broad, adjustable straps

Breast forms add weight. Thin straps concentrate that weight on one narrow line across your shoulder. Broad, adjustable straps spread it out so you can wear a bra all day without the telltale ache at the end of it.

Front closure

Mobility is often limited in the weeks (and sometimes months) after a mastectomy — especially if you've had lymph nodes removed or are going through reconstruction. Reaching behind your back to fasten a bra can genuinely hurt. Front-closure bras fasten at the sternum, so you never have to lift your arms overhead or twist your torso to get dressed.

Styles of mastectomy bras

There isn't one "mastectomy bra" — there's a whole wardrobe of them, built for different moments in your day and different stages of healing. Here's a quick comparison of the most common styles:

Style Best for What to expect
Soft bra / bralette Immediately post-op, sleep, loungewear Pullover or front-closure, stretch cotton or modal, zero pressure points
Sports bra Returning to walks, yoga, PT, everyday movement Higher coverage, compressive band, pocketed cups, broad straps
T-shirt bra Work, errands, a smooth line under clothing Light contour padding, hidden pockets, seamless outer cup
Front-fastening bra Early recovery through long-term wear Closure at the center front, often with hook-and-eye or magnetic clasps
Leisure / lace bralette Feeling like yourself again Pretty fabrics, pocketed, designed to be seen, not just worn

Soft bras

Soft bras are what most women reach for in the first few weeks after surgery and for lounging at home long after. They're cut from cotton, modal, or a gentle stretch knit — no structure, no pressure, just a soft hold.

Sports bras

As you start to move again, a mastectomy sports bra gives you the compression you need without the wires or thin straps of a mainstream one. Some women, especially those who've had reconstruction, go straight from a hospital bra into a mastectomy sports bra and stay there.

T-shirt bras

Light contour padding, pocketed cups, and a smooth outer surface make T-shirt bras the workhorses of a post-mastectomy wardrobe. These are the bras that disappear under a blouse, a sweater, or a fitted dress.

Front-fastening bras

A front closure is a quiet luxury after surgery. You don't have to think about it, twist for it, or ask anyone for help. Many Myya customers start with a front-fastening bra in recovery and keep it in rotation for years afterward.

Frequently asked questions

How soon after surgery can I wear a mastectomy bra?

Most women transition out of a hospital compression bra and into a soft mastectomy bra within the first two to four weeks, once your surgeon has cleared you. Your Myya fitter can help you choose a style that's gentle enough for early recovery.

Do I need a mastectomy bra if I had reconstruction?

Many women who've had reconstruction still prefer mastectomy bras — they're wireless, softer, and kinder to implants, expanders, and scar tissue. Pockets also let you add balance forms if there's any asymmetry between the two sides.

Will my insurance cover a mastectomy bra?

Yes. Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), health plans that cover mastectomy must also cover post-surgical bras and breast prostheses. Medicare covers up to four mastectomy bras per year. Commercial plans typically cover 2–6 bras annually. Myya is an accredited medical provider and bills your insurance directly.

What's the difference between a mastectomy bra and a regular bra?

A regular bra is designed to shape and support existing breast tissue. A mastectomy bra is designed to hold a breast form or prosthesis in place, be comfortable against surgical scars, and support a changed chest wall — usually without wires.

Can I wear a mastectomy bra without a breast form?

Absolutely. Many women wear their mastectomy bras "flat" — no forms inside — and simply love the comfort of wireless, pocketed, soft construction. The pockets are there when you want them, and invisible when you don't.

How do I get fitted without leaving my house?

Myya offers free virtual fittings with Certified Mastectomy Fitters. You'll meet your fitter on a private video call, they'll measure you step-by-step, and they'll recommend styles based on your surgery, your comfort, and your everyday life. Bras and forms ship to your door.

How many mastectomy bras should I have?

Most women start with three: one soft bra for recovery, one everyday T-shirt bra, and one sports or front-closure bra. As life gets more active again, a leisure or lace bralette is a beautiful addition. Your insurance typically covers a new set each year.
